Realities in the Middle East?

This excerpt from the Wall Street Journal:

Ultimately the truth sinks in and the West realizes that the natives were never ready for primetime.

But at what point, if ever, will they be ready for primetime? Or is their inevitable destiny to be ranked as also-rans? This tightrope act of balancing between points of realism, fatalism and arrogance is very tricky indeed.
