Oil spills
From: CNN.com - UK: Iraq torches 30 oil refineries - Mar. 21, 2003
Iraq was responsible for intentionally releasing some 11 million barrels of oil into the Arabian Gulf from January to May 1991, oiling more than 800 miles of Kuwaiti and Saudi Arabian coastline. The amount of oil released was categorized as 20 times larger than the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska and twice as large as the previous world record oil spill.
The cost of cleanup was estimated at more than $700 million
Just in case the environmentalist movement thinks it's a good idea not to get rid of this regime. I mean really, if they're going to compartmentalize themselves away from the larger issues then at least this is one they can grok.
Now to find something for the tree-huggers... Hrm, perhaps something like a snail darter or spotted owl...
