Dave Winer Considered Harmful
Maciej Ceglowski comments Dave Winer Considered Harmful.
Fortunately more folks are coming to this very same conclusion. Unfortunately however, they usually have to suffer quite a bit to achieve enlightenment.
Update: get this, Christian's thinking that Dave's trying to float the idea that Blogger's engaging in some chilling campaign to leave him out. In the process of which he's trying to conflate Userland (a three person company) to the same level as Netscape or Microsoft. Geez, what gall! This isn't hard to fathom, anyone leaving him or his products off a list maybe is likely doing so because of how he abuses people! There's no sense in them listing, linking or otherwise mentioning him with the horrendous abuse he dishes out.
Good points - nuff said - about just tuning the guy out by not linking to or mentioning him (unless there is some true insight rather than insult involved). People like him thrive on attention - it strokes their overblown egos. Weblogs can be self-sensoring - they are empoweing in that way.

Thanks, btw, with your help getting your Exporter tool to work. It was a huge relief when it finally did the trick.
Anyway, I really couldn't tell if the thing I cited from Evan's blog post was what Dave was referring to, but if so it seems like he read it too quickly.
And, hey, if UserLand just has three employees, they've managed to establish a pretty big footprint on that sweat equity.
Posted by: xian on July 5, 2003 10:36 PMxian - If you look at the latest stats its starting to look like Userland's 'big footprint' is nowhere near as big as they might lead you to believe, especially after the mass exodus of recent months. Certain people just work extra hard to make their footprint look big, far bigger than it actually is.
Posted by: Jeremy Gray on July 6, 2003 11:45 AMWhat stats are you using, that census site? I'd be interested in looking at it. It's true, though, that I was referring more to the promotional image of UserLand as an influential weblog co. than the marketshare or installed base, which frankly I have no idea what that is.
