Putty and line drawing?
I've a fix if you're trying to connect to a linux box using the PuTTY terminal emulator on Windows and the vt100 line drawing characters aren't working when using gnu screen. Edit your /etc/sysconfig/i18n file and set your LANG to "en_US" instead "en_US.UTF-8". This will keep Redhat's work-arounds for UTF-8 from screwing things up.
